Joan Tse is the town of Rocanville’s newest councillor after winning by acclamation in a by-election for a vacant council seat on October 21.

The seat was left vacant after former councillor Kelsey Selby resigned to become the manager at the Rocanville Aquatic Centre.

“My son’s girlfriend was working at the town office and said they were looking for someone, so I decided to go for it,” she says.

“I think just raising the kids in the community and having some spare time, it was something I wanted to do. As a business owner you often want to make your community a bit better and have your opinion in that as well.”

Tse, who runs New Fortune Restaurant with her husband Ken, says she has never thought about running council before, as she was too busy.

“I don’t think I ever had time with the restaurant being busy when we were younger and raising the kids and looking after Ken’s mom and dad. But now we have more spare time. I’m excited,” she says.

She says she wants to see Rocanville be a thriving town.

“You want to have Rocanville survive. In some other communities you see buildings empty but to see Rocanville’s main street still full, it’s a nice feeling, and it’s nice to have the support of the community.”
